PolyCIVIS | 14 Years After the Arab Spring: Egypt’s Polycrisis Risks and Potential for Civil Unrest

As part of their work with PolyCIVIS, Rachel Ainsworth and Dan Hoyer have produced a country profile and risk report for Egypt as part of the Polycrisis and Policy Brief series. Here, they focus on the concurrent issues that the country faces of water scarcity and food precarity, current government policies and megaprojects, and the internal dissent which is being heavily supressed by the ruling powers, concluding that “many of the conditions that led to the Arab Spring originally are still in place in Egypt and other MENA countries”.

In their analysis they make recommendations for environmental, economic, and socio-political solutions, which include greater support for small-scale sustainable farming, anti-corruption measures, and further investment in water-use technologies.
