The Success and Failure of the Montreal Protocol
Over at Existential Crunch, Florian Jehn turns his eye to the “poster child of environmental agreements”: The Montreal Protocol. Adopted by 197 countries with the aim to phase out the use of ozone layer-destroying chemicals, particularly chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the agreement has been hugely successful, with a massive reduction in the use of CFCs, and a good recovery rate for the ozone. So why can’t we apply this to our current climate crisis? Florian looks at why this isn’t a simple copy-and-paste solution, and what we need to understand when it comes to countries taking action.
